New Delhi: A freak robbery incident has come to light in Delhi’s Shahdara where two men, reportedly drunk, attempted to rob a couple at gunpoint, but instead ended up paying the victim Rs 100 after finding out that the poor couple only had Rs 20 with him.

The strange incident was caught on camera by an onlooker who appears to have captured it with his mobile phone from the window of a nearby building. The clip shows the two assailants on a Scooty (scooterette) attempting to rob the couple at gunpoint, but ended up paying Rs 100 instead, before leaving the scene on their two-wheeler.

The video has gone viral on social media platforms with some users even pointing out the “kind-hearted nature” of the two robbers. According to reports, the robbers eventually handed over a 100 rupee note after realizing their potential victims had no money and the woman was wearing fake jewelry.

The robbery reportedly took place on the night of June 21 (Wednesday),

Delhi Police learned of the incident after the video went viral on social media and launched an investigation, after which both suspects were identified and arrested.

A senior police official said the robbers were identified as Dev Verma, a GST accountant and his accomplice, Harsh Rajput, who works in a private company.

“We recovered the gun, the scooter used in the crime and 30 mobile phones. We have filed four cases against them and further investigations are ongoing,” said DCP Shahdara Rohit Meena, according to an India Today report, adding that the police used more than 200 CCTV images to identify them.

Police said the robbers were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. “We reviewed CCTV footage and found that these robbers had caused panic in many areas,” said DCP Meena.

The DCP provided details of the incident, saying police received several calls on the night of June 21 informing them of criminal activity in the area. “The first call reported an attempted robbery to take jewelery from a couple, followed by a second call informing police of an attempted cell phone theft,” he said, adding that a third call inquired of a attempted robbery at gunpoint.

Following this information, the Station House Officer (SHO) arrived at the scene and found one of the suspects armed with a gun, the officer said.

“The robbers attempted to rob the couple at gunpoint and attempted to take the jewelry from the young woman. However, they realized it was fake and the couple only carried Rs 20,” said DCP Meena.

He said the robbers then allegedly humiliated and insulted the couple before handing them a 100 rupee note and fleeing the spot on their two-wheeler.
