Pete Doherty has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after admitting he thinks ‘death is just around the corner’.

The Libertines singer, 44, has always been open about his prolific battles with drug addiction, including crack and heroin, in the past.

Although he has given up drugs, Pete admits his diet hasn’t been great and he eats a lot of ‘cheese and sugar’.

Speak with The Guardian’s Saturday magazine, he said: ‘I gave up the main poisons and my health improved. Then you are told that alcohol and cheese and sugar are just as bad and that you were healthier when you used heroin.

Pete went on to call himself ‘a bit of a glutton’.

“It’s not a joke,” he said. ‘I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. And at the moment I lack the discipline to tackle cholesterol.’

Pete previously told documentary maker Louis Theroux that he was ‘a very sick man’ for his series Louis Theroux Interviews.

Due to his past lifestyle, the musician admitted that he doesn’t see himself living long and said he thinks “death is just around the corner.”

He has been off hard drugs for three years, but said he still drinks and that in the Theroux interview he drank rum and chain smoked.

In addition to appearing on screens with the legendary documentary filmmaker, he is also the subject of a film about his demons, which hit theaters last year.

Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin shows the extent of his horrific drug addiction, his painful performances at the height of his illness and also features a film of him with his girlfriend and lover Amy Winehouse.

The documentary was shot over ten years by his wife Katia de Vidas, and in disturbing scenes you see him smoking dope and writhing in the aftermath.

He is also shown tying a tourniquet around his arm just before injecting heroin, before scenes cut to him shouting to a crowd of adoring fans, “On the one hand, thank you, on the other hand… f* *k you’ .

In other chaotic moments, he is also shown setting fire to various things.

In the film he says: ‘Hard drugs entered my life and slowly, slowly and then very quickly took control.’

He first used heroin in 2002, when he was just 23, but the addiction only took hold when he became sweaty and sick after a trip to Japan.
