The “breaks” between Prince William And Prince Harry ‘Split wide open’ after Harry exposed his issues with family and The Firm in 2021, according to royal author Omid Scobie.
On one occasion, Harry, 39, “made his grievances against the family and the institution public” in his speech and that of his wife. Meghan Markle‘s 2021 CBS tell-all, the rift between him and William, 41, widened, Scobie wrote in his upcoming Endgame book. Harry and Meghan’s 2022 Netflix documentary and the prince’s 2023 memoir, Reserve, has just added fuel to the fire, according to the royal journalist.
Scobie claimed in his book that William “believes Harry and Meghan blindsided the family” with their public comments about the institution. He further alleged that William had mentioned his brother and sister-in-law’s “oh so California” self-interest to several “friends and aides” over the past two years.
Scobie further claimed in his tell-all that a source told him that William is “convinced” that Harry has been “brainwashed” by an “army of therapists” and that’s why William says he “doesn’t even recognize” his younger sibling anymore .
Harry, meanwhile, raised eyebrows when he and Meghan, 42, announced they were stepping back from their senior royal duties. The couple, who share children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, later moved to the United States and began sharing their version of what happened behind the doors of Buckingham Palace before their departure.
When Harry started telling stories about his life as a prince, especially in his memoirs, his relationship with William and their father, King Charles III, became even more tense. Harry admitted in his book that he felt he was “the shadow, the support, the Plan B” for William, who is next in line for the British throne.
“I was called upon to provide support, distraction, diversion and, if necessary, a spare part,” Harry wrote of his place in the family. ‘Kidney maybe. Blood transfusion. A piece of bone marrow. This has all been made explicitly clear to me from the beginning of my life journey and has been reinforced regularly since then.”
Scobie, meanwhile, revealed in his book that he saw the brothers’ friction firsthand in 2019 after years of covering the royal family.
The author explained that he felt “growing tensions” in his “working relationship with Kensington Palace” as 2020 approached. After reporting on Harry and Meghan’s October 2019 trip to South Africa, Scobie claimed one of William’s aides told him he felt “uneasy” about his “relationship with the Sussex team.”
Scobie claimed Endgame that a Kensington Palace staffer told him ‘privately’ that while he didn’t have to ‘take sides’, he ‘has to accept that there are sides to this’.
While William and Harry are still at odds, William’s relationship with his father, 75, appears to be growing stronger in the aftermath of the tragedy.
“They had to put up this united front against Harry and Meghan,” royal expert Christopher Andersen told exclusively We weekly in July. ‘They have been insulted by members of their own family. It was quite an ordeal for them, and I think they went full circle, so to speak. And they came out of it with a stronger bond.”
Endgame: A look at the royal family and the monarchy’s fight for survival will be released on Tuesday, November 28.
