Private jet, supercars and yachts seized as three arrested in investigation into £76m luxury nursing home ‘fraud’

A private jet, supercars and yachts have been seized as part of a £76million fraud investigation into luxury care homes.

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) also arrested three people after carrying out raids on St Leonard’s, Dorsetand Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

It came as part of an investigation into property development company the Carlauren Group.

Some elderly residents had to leave their homes houses when the group went bankrupt in 2019 and 600 investors ran out of money.

Carlauren bought 23 properties in the UK – including the historic Windlestone Hall in Durham – to convert them into a residential home luxury nursing homes.

Hundreds of moguls and companies handed over cash to finance rooms that would be rented to elderly residents.

In return, Carlauren promised a guaranteed annual payout and the ability for investors to sell the asset back after ten years for a profit of up to 25 percent.

They boasted that the properties would include high-end facilities including swimming swimming pools and room service.

But only nine of the buildings functioned as healthcare facilities, while some continued to do so hotels.

The SFO said the group has purchased three high-powered units sports cars – two Lamborghinis and a McLaren 570GT – and a private jet.

Carlauren, who reportedly also bought two yachtsclaimed the lavish items were for corporate use.

Nick Ephgrave QPM, director of the Serious Fraud Office, said: “The abrupt collapse of this company has caused anxiety and enormous fear for many, with elderly people forced to flee their homes and investors left with nothing.

“Today’s arrests are an important development in our investigation and a step toward getting the answers so many people need.”
