A man has sparked a furious debate after saying he had to move from London because he could not survive in the capital on a £100,000 salary.

The man, who posts on Tiktok as “Sovereign Speaks,” claims to earn a six-figure salary as a project manager.

Despite taking home £5,587.45 a month, putting him in the top five per cent of earners in the country, the man says he cannot afford the average London rent of £2,500, baffling others who said that he would still have more than £3,000 a month. month reserve after rent.

He also didn’t go to college, which means no student loans come out of his paycheck.

The video is part of a wider debate that has erupted on Tiktok after a doctor who works in private medicine on £600,000 a year said his NHS colleagues who earn £100,000 a year ‘cannot live comfortably’.

According to the ONS, the average annual wage in Britain is around £35,000, while Londoners earn on average around £44,000.

“I hate the idea that people who earn £100,000 a year and complain about the cost of living have no right to complain because we just don’t know how to save money,” the content creator says in a clip .

‘Don’t get me wrong, I know that £100,000 a year is the highest income in this country, and so what a lot of people do is put their lifestyles together and say, ‘If I had an extra £2,000, £300 a month would be it. I’m doing well”, so how can this person with an income of £100,000 not be doing well?

“Even if you keep your expenses low and just blend your lifestyle, you just have more responsibility

‘I take care of my mother, I help my family. “The idea that the top five percent of earners in this country should live below average is insane,” he added.

He added that he knows there are cheaper places in London, but that the ‘top earners’ should not pay much below average.

“Tell me this isn’t a problem with our economy,” he added.

‘In the past, a postman could be the sole breadwinner for his family.’

The comments came after a 65-year-old doctor earning £600,000 a year said his NHS colleagues were ‘uncomfortable’ with £100,000 a year in London.

Commenting on the video, Stephen Adeoye, who goes by ‘Corporate Steve’, said living paycheck to paycheck on a £100,000 salary is “delusional”.

“London is not the problem, you are,” he explained.

“You have inflated your lifestyle to a point you cannot understand.”

“100 percent and that side of TikTok irritates me so much,” wrote another.

Data released earlier this year shows that renters in many places in London and the South East need a salary of at least £50,000 a year to rent without sharing, new data shows.

These two areas saw the biggest increases in rents last month, according to Goodlord’s latest rental index.

Average prices rose by 7.98 per cent in London to £2,145 per month in August, compared to July, and by 13.95 per cent in the South East to £1,497 per month.

An annual salary of £50,000 gives a net salary after tax of around £3,169 per month.

Take Goodlord’s average monthly rent of £2,145 out of this figure and tenants are left with around £1,000 per month to cover all other bills.

These bills include water, gas and electricity, as well as council tax, insurance, travel and food costs, as well as any telephone and TV subscriptions.

Tenants would be left with £1,024 per month or £236 per week. This is based on the fact that a tenant rents an average-priced rental property alone and does not share it with anyone else.
