ARMED police stormed a hospital this morning after a series of threats and reports of a man armed with a weapon in the area.

Employees of the Royal United Hospital in Bath raised the alarm after two phone calls were made by an unknown man.

The infirmary was locked down as a precaution by weapons officers from Avon and Somerset Police withdrawn.

A nearby primary school was also placed on lockdown as a police helicopter circled overhead in the west of the city.

Police later received an unconfirmed report of a man carrying a knife in the vicinity of the hospital around 10:35 am.

The identity of the person in question is being investigated to determine what he had in his possession.

Police say no injuries were reported and both lockdowns were later lifted.

Avon and Somerset Police said a heavy police presence will remain in the area.

A force spokesman said: “We responded to an incident near the Royal United Hospital in Bath this morning.

“Hospital staff contacted police at approximately 9:45 am this morning to report they had received a call from an unknown male making verbal threats.

“Police were already present at the hospital on an unrelated matter and contacted the hospital security teams.

“A second call involving verbal threats was received at around 10.15am and further officers were also sent to attend the scene, including firearms officers.

“We received a report at around 10.35am of a man carrying what we believed to be a bladed weapon in the vicinity of the hospital, but this has not been confirmed at this time.

The identity of the man in question is being investigated to determine what he had in his possession.

“The Royal United Hospital has decided to go into lockdown as a precaution. We advised a local primary school to also go into lockdown as a precaution, but both have now been lifted.

“We would like to reassure the public that no injuries have been reported and there remains a police presence in the area.”
