Sebastian Stan will play a younger incarnation of former President Donald Trump in a film titled The Apprentice, which documents Trump’s rise in the 1970s and 1980s.

The Emmy-nominated actor, 41, is joined in the cast by Succession star Jeremy Strong, 44, who plays Trump’s late lawyer and mentor Roy Cohn; and Oscar-nominated actress Maria Bakalova, 27, who will play Trump’s late ex-wife Ivana Trump, Deadline reported Wednesday.

Production on the film, directed by Ali Abbasi, began earlier this week and stars Romanian-born actor Constanța in the lead role, the outlet reported.

Variety reported that the film’s title would be The Student, adding that a logline for the upcoming film described it as “an exploration of power and ambition in a world of corruption and deceit.”

“It’s a mentor-protégé story that charts the origins of an American dynasty. Filled with larger-than-life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.”

The screenplay for the film was written by writer Gabriel Sherman, who wrote the 2014 book The Loudest Voice in the Room: How the Brilliant, Bombastic Roger Ailes Built Fox News – and Divided a Country.

The book was then adapted into the 2019 Showtime miniseries The Loudest Voice.

Stan is turning professional and has racked up Emmy and Golden Globe nominations after starring as Tommy Lee on Hulu’s Pam & Tommy.

He was rumored to be playing Ric Flair in a movie after meeting the professional wrestling icon in New York City last May. (Aaron Dean Eisenberg plays Flair in the upcoming The Iron Claw.)

Stan appeared in several films last year, including Dumb Money, Sharper and Ghosted.

Few have been for dramatic productions, the most recent being Irish actor Brendan Gleeson in the 2020 Showtime miniseries The Comey Rule.

Trump has been spoofed for decades on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, with actors like Alec Baldwin, Darrell Hammond, Jason Sudeikis, Taran Killam and the late Phil Hartman playing the role at various points.
