We need answers! The first season of Disconnection left fans with many questions that need resolution in the show’s second season. Spoilers for the upcoming season 1.
The Apple TV+ show centers on a team of employees at Lumon Industries, who all agreed to undergo a surgical procedure – a so-called “severance package” – that separates their work life from their home life. Their work life is their ‘innie’ persona and outside of work they are called ‘outies’. One of the employees, Mark (Adam Scott), the company begins to distrust after his colleague, Petey, mysteriously disappears and he is promoted in his department, Macro Data Refinement (MDR).
In his new role he meets Helly (played by Britt Lager) who recently underwent surgery, which erased her memories. Outside of work, Petey encounters Mark, who has no memory of him at the time. After seeing Petey a few times, Mark discovers from his former colleague that he has been psychologically tortured, leading to his interest in possibly reversing the procedure. However, Petey ultimately dies as a result of the surgery.
Throughout the first season, Mark teams up with three of his MDR colleagues, including Helly, to uncover a conspiracy involving the layoff operations. Helly wants to leave the company and tries to escape to regain her memories. In the final, Helly – and Disconnection viewers – discover that she is the daughter of the company’s CEO, James Eagen (Michael Siberry).
In addition to Scott and Lower, the psychological thriller also shines Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, John Turturro, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman And Michael Chernus. The show, created by Then Erikson and directed by am Stillerwas nominated for 14 Emmys in 2022 and won two awards.
In April 2022, Apple TV+ confirmed that the drama had been renewed for a second season and Erickson talked about his plans for the next episode.
“In season 2 we’re going to show all these people from the outside,” he said Entertainment weekly at the time. “Like Mark, they all had their own reason for undergoing this procedure, and they are all in some stage of a healing process. …Being able to take what Adam did in the first season – with the distinction between his innie and outie, and how they feel like the same person, but with this vastly different lived experience – seeing the version of that dichotomy of the other three characters is: I think this is the most exciting part.”
