Shortly after Jonathan Owens made waves for his comments about who is the bigger “catch” in his relationship with his wife Simone Bileshe shares his pride in her achievements.
After Biles, 26, was named the Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year, Owens, 28, shared the news via his Instagram Story.
“You keep surprising me ❤️ ❤️,” Owens wrote on Friday, December 22, via Instagram Story. “You deserve it baby!!!!! So proud of you 👏.”
The AP had previously named Biles Female Athlete of the Year twice, making her the fourth woman to earn the honor in the past 50 years.
Days earlier, the Green Bay Packers safety sparked an online debate when he revealed that Biles “had withdrawn [him]when they started dating.
“I always say it’s the men,” Owens joked on the Tuesday, December 19 episode of “The Pivot” podcast. “She did [pull me]But because I fought it. … At the time, I was afraid to commit. I thought, ‘This is my third year [in the NFL]I’m trying to… it’s a little early,’ but you know, it happens when you least expect it.”
Owens added that they “immediately hit it off” on their first date after matching on dating app Raya in 2020, although he had no idea about her gymnastics career.
“I’ve never really paid attention to gymnastics, so it piqued my curiosity [and I was like]”I’ll see what’s going on,” he said when he came across her Raya profile. “I didn’t know who she was at the time, but the first thing I saw was that she was just a lot [Instagram] followers. So in my mind I’m thinking, ‘Okay, she must be good.’
After two years of dating, Owens proposed and they got married in April.
Biles accompanied her husband to the taping of “The Pivot” and was seen smiling as Owens told the origin story of their relationship. Although Biles was seemingly unaffected by his comments, many social media users criticized his comments.
“It’s horrible to see Simone Biles’ husband sabotaging her in public just a few months before the 2024 Summer Olympics,” an X (formerly Twitter) user wrote on Friday. “I want all people to know that, even if that’s you [do] not ‘like’ Simone Biles, no one deserves to be treated like that.”
Another added: “I only know him as Simone Biles’ husband. Don’t ask me anything else.”
Shortly after the comments sparked a viral debate, Owens shut down rumors of marital problems.
“Undisturbed 😂❤️ Just know that we have locked ourselves in here 🤞🏽” he wrote via Instagram on Friday, sharing throwback wedding photos.
For her part, Biles responded, “🤞🏾💋 for life.”
