Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan said the vote came after his members rejected a “ridiculous” pay offer from the Rail Delivery group last April.

He added: “Drivers obviously wouldn't vote for industrial action again and again if they thought this was a good offer. They don't.”

The vote means that Aslef members can resign at any time over the next six months.

Every six months a new vote is taken on whether industrial action should continue.

The announcement is the latest kick in the teeth for commuters in a long-running dispute over pay and benefits.

It comes as more than 300 members of the RMT union will disable tools for 24 hours starting Monday, February 19 at midnight.

And it will be 24 hour strikes from midnight on Monday 4 March.

Employees taking action include security, postal, revenue and control personnel.

Strikes have rocked the UK rail network since June 2022.
