The Duchess of Sussex looked stylish even while pregnant with baby Archie

Meghan appeared at the 2018 British Fashion Awards and beamed in asymmetrical Givenchy as she presented an award to Clare Waight Keller, the designer who created her wedding dress earlier that year.

As always, it was an elegant, sleek display. Still, there was one aspect of the outfit that raised a few eyebrows.

Because the hands that simultaneously showed off her wedding sparklers and baby bump were adorned not with the bright or neutral shades of nail polish normally expected of women in the British royal family, but with a vibrant shade of red-black, possibly Rouge Noir by Chanel.

Not that the Duchess is the only royal to have broken protocol in this particular way, as these photos demonstrate.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, added an unusual splash of color as she attended this year’s Easter morning service in Windsor.

The mother of three had her nails painted dark red, in contrast to the neutral or bright shades she typically wears at public appearances.

Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, 58, is occasionally spotted in berry-colored nail polish, as well as red and pink.

Princess Diana stuck to the neutral rule until her marriage to Charles fell apart.

As a single woman, she returned to brighter shades of nail polish.

Referring to the night Diana wore her black ‘revenge dress’ (Prince Charles’s confession of adultery had been broadcast that same evening), designer Christina Stambolian wrote: ‘She was clearly angry. […] She was wearing bright red nail polish, which we had never seen her do before. She said, ‘Let’s be bad tonight.’

Queen Elizabeth, meanwhile, had preferred a light pink ‘Ballet Slippers’ color from Essie.

The shade ended up complementing many of her colorful outfits.

In 1989, Queen Elizabeth’s hairdresser sent Essie a letter asking for a bottle of ballet slippers, calling it “the only color Her Majesty would wear.”
