Is that Valentine's Day bouquet from your special someone starting to wilt and droop?

Before you throw those roses into the compost, pause.

With a few tricks, your buds can be the gift that keeps on giving. . .

STAY FRESH: Keep your fresh flowers going for as long as possible by removing dead or rotting stems and changing the water in the vase about every three days.

Make sure leaves and other foliage are above the water line to prevent contamination.

DRY OUT: Before roses turn brown, you can dry them so they last long after the day of romance.

Simply remove the leaves and tie the stems together at the bottom with string.

You can then hang the flowers upside down in a dark, dry place for about two to three weeks.

Once they have dried out, you can display them in a vase, just as you would with a fresh bunch.

Be careful when handling them as they are more fragile.

BATH TIME: Once your roses start to wilt, you can use them as part of a luxurious pampering session.

Florist Kathy Muir, who works for bath and beauty brand Lush, says: “Petals from an old bouquet make a beautiful addition to the bath and will continue the romance beyond Valentine's Day.”

Rose petals are linked to relaxation and adding a few petals to an evening of enjoyment makes you feel extra special.

Or you can make special bath salts with rose petals, which also makes a nice gift.

Dry them out first by leaving them on a baking sheet for a few days and then tear or blend them into small pieces.

Mix with a few cups of Epsom salt – a 1kg bag costs £3 at Sainsbury's.

Add a few drops of essential oils to the mixture. Lavender and rose essential oils both work well.
