TURN your home into a sanctuary for nature by encouraging wildlife to thrive.
A few inexpensive changes to your outdoor space will now attract a wider range of creatures as the weather warms up. . .
HOLE IN ONE: Encourage hedgehogs to your garden by creating entry and exit points.
Check that your neighbor is on board and dig a hole about 13 cm wide and 13 cm deep under the garden fences.
Or you can cut a hole in a panel if both parties agree.
The more access hedgehogs have along a street, the more likely they are to roam your area.
Try to encourage local residents to create a route where the small animals can come and go.
MAKE A SPLASH: Building a pond is a great way to encourage wildlife.
It doesn’t have to be big; try using an old sink.
Make sure there are a few ramps so animals can get in and out easily. Stones or tree trunks are ideal slopes.
Choose a location that is partially sunny and wait for it to fill with rainwater.
Charity Plantlife advises adding plants such as marsh marigold and aquatic herb to the water.
Check out Freecycle and gardening groups on Facebook, as many green-fingered enthusiasts give away excess plants.
FLOWER POWER: Wildflowers are a cheap and easy way to create a habitat that bees and butterflies will love.
You don’t need a garden; you can reuse old buckets, large containers or even boots with holes as patio planters.
Cheap seeds are available online or, if you want to raise money for Comic Relief this year, you can buy one of Holland & Barrett’s compostable red noses, for £4.50.
When planted it turns into wildflowers.
If you have a lawn, you may already have dandelions and daisies.
When mowing, use a blade setting that is high enough to go over emerging flowers.
