Terrifying moment landing gear SNAPT US-bound plane off after it is forced to turn around and make an emergency landing in Luxembourg

  • The Boeing 747 was on its way to Chicago O’Hare International Airport on Sunday
  • The Cargolux aircraft had to roll back when the landing gear failed to retract

This is the terrifying moment when the landing gear of a plane destined for the United States broke off after it was forced to turn around and make an emergency landing.

The Boeing 747 was en route to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, but had to return to the runway at Luxembourg Airport when the landing gear failed to retract.

Cargolux, the company operating the plane, described it as a “significant landing incident” in a statement and said the plane also had to dump fuel.

The Luxembourg company added that the plane was able to come to a complete stop and no one was injured in the incident on Sunday evening.

Dramatic footage shows the plane landing on the runway, the heavy landing causing one of the bogies to detach and bounce into the air.

The video shows the plane landing before the rear wheels hit the tarmac, causing smoke to billow from the rubbing.

At this point, you’ll see a set of four wheels tear loose and fly into the air behind it as it rolls across the tarmac.

Smoke continues to billow out from under the wheels as a fire engine springs into action, speeding past the camera on its way to the runway.

The camera pans away from the aircraft and follows the detached wheel bogies as it spins at high speed, bouncing off the tarmac and high into the air.

Photos of the aftermath show a gaping hole in the plane’s undercarriage, as well as a second large dent where it appears the wheels had bounced up and into.

The damaged landing gear can be seen underneath the plane, with mangled pieces of metal and loose wires flying off where the wheels had been.

Away from the plane, the four wheels lay on the grass beside the runway.

In a statement, the airline said: ‘Cargolux would like to confirm that one of its aircraft, the B747-400F with registration mark LX-OCV, suffered a major landing incident at 18:52 on Sunday evening at Luxembourg Airport.

“The aircraft was unable to retract its landing gear on take-off from Luxembourg. As a result, it was forced to safely dump fuel to return to land at the airport. On its landing roll, its right main landing gear detached from the aircraft.

However, the aircraft came to a controlled stop and was taken care of by the emergency services. No one on board or on the ground was injured. The competent authorities have been informed of the incident.

“The aircraft remains on the runway and recovery operations are underway,” it added.
