Footage from someone on the ground showed cars lined up in a parking lot at San Francisco International Airport, with one completely destroyed.

The car’s windows were smashed and the side and trunk appeared to be crushed by a heavy weight coming from above.

United Airlines said: “United Flight 35 subsequently lost one tire to take off from San Francisco and landed at LAX. Our team quickly arranged a new plane to take customers to Osaka tonight.

“We are grateful to our pilots and flight attendants for their professionalism in handling this situation.

“We will work with both customers and the owners of the damaged vehicles in SFO to ensure their needs are met.”

The flight carried 235 passengers, 10 flight attendants and four pilots, United said.

The airline added that the aircraft, built in 2002, has six straps on each of the two main landing gear struts.

It said it was designed to land safely with missing or damaged tires.

The incident comes next a Delta Airlines Boeing 747 lost a front tire while taxiing towards a runway.

On the way to Bogotá, Colombia from Atlanta, Georgia the plane had to be towed off the runway.

Delta said in a statement at the time: “Delta Flight 982 ATL/BOG was taxiing for departure when a nose gear tire separated from the gear.”

The Boeing 757 who lost a tire was 32 years old; the company stopped producing the aircraft twenty years ago.

Early January, a door on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 came loose mid flight.

Passengers were terrified when the plane flew with a hole in the side.

Later the Federal Aviation Administration grounded certain Boeing 737s across all airlines until proper inspections were completed.
