TESCO has urgently recalled a popular £2.20 item due to a serious allergy risk.
The supermarket giant has removed a batch of Tesco 18 Cupcakes from its shelves because the label does not list soya as an ingredient.
This poses a risk to people with a soy allergy, which in severe cases can lead to anaphylaxis, which can be fatal if not treated urgently.
Anaphylaxsis UK warned: “Anaphylaxis is a serious, life-threatening allergic reaction. It can happen seconds or minutes after you are exposed to something you are allergic to.
'The immune system releases a flood of chemicals that can cause the body to go into shock. Blood pressure suddenly drops and the airways narrow, blocking your breathing.
“The pulse may be rapid and weak, and you may develop a rash. You may also feel nauseous and vomit.
“Anaphylaxis should be treated right away with an injection of epinephrine. If not treated right away, it can be fatal.
“If you don't have epinephrine, you should go to the emergency room immediately. If anaphylaxis is not treated right away, it can be fatal.
“The immune system begins to collapse, blood pressure drops and the airways can tighten, causing the person to be unable to breathe and lose consciousness.
“Less severe reactions include hives, eczema or swelling and rash, runny nose and sneezing, red or watery eyes, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea.”
Tesco said: “Please do not use this product and return it to the store where a full refund will be given. No receipt is required.
“Tesco apologizes to our customers for any inconvenience this may cause. If you require any further information, please contact customer services directly on 0800 505 555.”
The cakes in question have batch code 24026. They can be kept until February 27, 2024.
A Food Standards Agency recall said: “Tesco is recalling Tesco 18 Cupcakes because some packs are incorrectly packed with Tesco 12 Party Cupcakes containing soya, which is not declared on the label.
“This means the product poses a potential health risk to anyone with an allergy to soy.”
