Make a connection. The bear cast have had more success in their dating lives than their fictional counterparts.
The Hulu series, which premiered in June 2022, explores talented chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) as he returns to Chicago to see his older brother Mikey’s (John Bernthal) restaurant after his death. Season 1 focused on Carmy’s attempts to keep the deli going while dealing with his own grief over his brother’s suicide.
Fans were quick to question the chemistry between Carmy and his sous chef Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) — but the cast wasn’t so sold on a potential romance.
“They suffered a lot of trauma on both sides. Like even that [was explored] “I don’t think that window is open,” Edebiri said exclusively Us weekly in January 2023. “But if they did, there would have to be about two seasons of them just doing individual therapy before that would even be an option.”
The Abbot Elementary School star noted that the series did not initially intend to explore the colleagues as a couple. “I think when we were making it, neither of us [me nor Jeremy Allen White] thought about that,” she shared with Us at the time. “It felt really nice to do something that felt different. There aren’t that many platonic men [and] female relationships.”
White, for his part, hinted that Carmy and Sydney were still having trouble working out on screen.
“You still have this tension, with Carmy and Sydney, and this balance of power that they’re still going to struggle with. Yes, he apologized, more or less. Yes, she more or less accepted it. Yeah, they both have a shared passion for this thing,” the said Shameless alum told Collider in July 2022. “But there’s definitely still a lot for them to figure out together.”
Out of the picture, the Bear cast has remained more closed about their love life. White offered rare glimpses of his marriage to Addison Timlin after they tied the knot in 2019.
“I love you deep down in my bones,” the actor gushed about his wife in his Best Actor acceptance speech at the 2023 Golden Globes. “Thank you for all you do, thank you for all you’ve done.”
Timlin, for her part, took to social media to praise White for the professional achievement.
“When we were 14 years old and I first saw you perform in drama class, I couldn’t take my eyes off you. If we were to check your rules for Shameless I would be so excited if I knew in advance what everyone would see on set the next day,” she wrote via Instagram in January 2023. “Watching the pilot for The Bear, I cried my heart out. I think somewhere I must have known how much life was about to change, but mostly I just knew that the world was about to discover what I knew all along.”
She added: “What a privilege it was to be the first to know. I love this picture so much because you look 14 and 31 at the same time. Watching you win on Tuesday was one of the most overwhelming dimension hopping moments of my entire life, watching you win last night while holding our two babies was pretty inappropriate in this world too. Dad won [sic] another cup for trophy winners. We are so proud.”
Four months later Us confirmed that Timlin filed for divorce after three years of marriage.
