Tim McDonald made a shocking joke at the expense of Sunrise presenter David ‘Kochie’ Koch on Tuesday night’s episode of The Cheap Seats.

The Channel Ten presenter, 29, reported on Matt Shirvington, 44, who replaced the old breakfast anchor after 21 years.

He then snapped to footage of the former Olympian and revealed why he was looking forward to taking the helm of one of television’s coveted roles.

“What I love most is sitting [the Sunrise] couch and go from complete elation and excitement and happiness with some of the stories you hear about — to the heartbreak, and the horror and the sadness and wipe a tear from your eye,” Shirvo is heard saying in the footage.

After the clip, co-host Melanie Bracewell balked.

“It’s all a bit of fun, but my favorite part is the horrors,” Bracewell said, clearly mocking Shirvo’s heartfelt praise.

Then McDonald took the prank to a whole new level, appearing to lash out at both Shirvo and David Koch, 67.

Good luck Shirvo. He replaces Kochie. That’s a big box to fill. Well done. All the best,” he added.

Bracewell was stunned by her colleague’s remark and fell into a nervous fit of laughter.

The crude joke came just hours after Kochie and Sunrise co-host Natalie Barr were spotted having a transfer lunch with Shirvo.

As the Olympic sprinter prepares for Australia’s No. 1 breakfast show, the trio eschewed a boisterous farewell party in favor of a low-key lunch at Tapavino restaurant in Barangaroo – three days before Kochie’s scheduled last day on the air.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Shirvo shared the advice Kochie had given him before taking the top job.

He also addressed reports that he earns only half his predecessor’s salary, despite Kochie only working four days a week during his last years at Sunrise.

Kochie said the two nicest things, which is, “You’re going to have the time of your life and you’re a good fit for the part,” said Shirvo.

The father-of-three was officially announced as Kochie’s replacement on Monday – nearly a week after Daily Mail Australia first reported the promotion.

The group enjoyed a long lunch at the Spanish eatery, toasting pints of beer while enjoying tapas.

The three left the restaurant together, exchanging hugs and kisses before Kochie and Barr got into a taxi together and Shirvo walked to his car.

Despite spending much of his post-athletic media career on the Seven Network, Shirvo’s salary is much less than Kochie’s rumored $1.5 million a year package – which he negotiated in addition to a lighter Monday-to-Thursday schedule.

Instead, he would have signed an initial $400,000-a-year salary deal with the network — subject to an increase in ratings.

When asked if he thought his pay was low for such a demanding and high-profile job, Shirvo said, “I don’t really know. I’m just happy in the role.’
