With the cost of living having risen and prices for festive food soaring, it can be tough to get Christmas chocolate for the whole family on a budget in December.

Earlier this month it was revealed that confectionery giants Nestle, Mars, Incorporated and Cadbury have downsized their chocolate tubs by as much as 17 percent in the past five years.

However, there’s a little-known British online store where you can get Christmas chocolates for up to 50 percent less.

Approved food – a company based in Dodworth, South Yorkshire – largely sells products that are close to or have just expired.

However, the items are still within their expiration dates, meaning they are still safe to eat.

In contrast, the sweet treats retail for £2 each on the high street, meaning customers can get a 50 per cent discount by shopping online.

For a pack of five it’s £5, down from £9.99.

The site lists the Lindt Lindor Milk and White Chocolate Christmas Selection Gift Box for just £5.99, while in stores it usually costs £7.50 or more.

Plus, the box’s best before date is actually February 2024, making it an ideal festive treat.

Meanwhile, Holdsworth Chocolates Truly Scrumptious Assorted Cube costs just £4.99 – which is £4 cheaper than the usual retail price.

You can also buy in bulk: 144 bars of Cadbury Flakes are selling for £10.99 instead of £13.99.

The Montezumas Lots Of Love Heart Shaped Milk and Dark Chocolate Truffle Collection offers huge discounts at almost half the price – you can get it for £5 instead of £9.99.

Savvy shoppers will be pleased to know that not only are the sweet treats on offer, but other Christmas treats are also available.

The Yogi Tea Christmas Calendar, containing 24 tea bags, costs £10 – a £4.99 discount on the retail price.

It comes after several British supermarkets backed the Mail on Sunday’s War on Food Waste campaign and removed best before dates from a variety of products, including milk.
