The powerful storm that wreaked havoc in the Northeast today battered South Carolina and North Carolina over the weekend, causing high tides and flooding. By mid-afternoon Sunday, parts of South Carolina were soaked more than nine inches of rain.

Charleston, S.C., recorded the fourth highest tide on record, and the highest tide without a hurricane, said Steven Taylor, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Charleston. The high tide on Sunday reached 3.86 meters. The record high was 12.52 feet, measured during Hurricane Hugo in 1989, he said.

Ben Almquist, Charleston’s emergency manager, said a few roads had to be closed due to flooding.

“Several buildings were reported with water damage, and 50 to 80 people had to be pulled from their vehicles,” he said. No serious injuries were reported.

The storm was the second to hit the East Coast in recent days. A week ago, many of the same communities were under similar surveillance and warnings.
