Britain has been named the 37th safest country in the world in 2023 in an annual survey that ranks 163 independent states and territories according to their level of peacefulness.

The study – called the Global Peace Index and produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace – covers 99.7 percent of the population and measures ‘societal safety and security, domestic and international conflict and the degree of militarization’.

The report concludes that Iceland is the safest country overall – although its publication preceded current volcanic activity – followed by Denmark (second), Ireland (third) and New Zealand (fourth).

America is again in 131st place, just behind South Africa (130th) and Haiti (129th).

Afghanistan (163rd) is considered the least peaceful country in the world for the eighth year in a row, followed by Yemen (162nd), Syria (161st), South Sudan (160th) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (159th).

The report’s authors say: ‘The war in Ukraine had a significant impact on global peace, with Ukraine and Russia experiencing the largest and fifth largest deterioration in peace respectively. Haiti, Mali and Israel were the other countries with the greatest deterioration [note that the study also preceded the current conflict in Israel].’

According to the research, Europe is the most peaceful region in the world and is home to seven of the ten most peaceful countries.

The other three most peaceful countries are in the Asia-Pacific region. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) remained the world’s least peaceful region, the report concluded. It is home to four of the ten least peaceful countries.

IMPACT OF WAR IN UKRAINE

The economic impact of the violence has increased by 479% or $449 billion, equivalent to 64% of Ukraine’s gross domestic product.

65% of men in Ukraine between the ages of 20 and 24 have fled the country or died in the conflict.

The report continues: ‘There are only two countries in the North American region, with Canada [11th] there is an increase in peace of 2.9 percent, and the US experiences a slight decrease in peace, with the overall score worsening by 0.38 percent.

“There is a significant difference in peace between the two countries.”

Why? The report shows that one of the reasons is the sense of security in Canada. “Less than 20 percent of Canadians report that they do not feel safe walking alone in their city or neighborhood at night.”

One reason for America’s low ranking is its murder rate, with the report stating: ‘The United States recorded the fourth largest increase in the murder rate, which is now above six per 100,000 residents and more than six times higher than in most Western European countries. .’
