It’s over for Hoda Kotb And Joel Schiffman. Nearly a decade after they first crossed paths, the Today show co-anchor and the financier have ended their romantic relationship.
“I met him at an event I didn’t want to go to,” Kotb recalls Watch what happens live with Andy Cohen in 2015, two years after she and Schiffman met. “It was pouring rain, it was dirty, it was a bunch of Wall Street guys – not my audience. I had to give a speech, they were bored. When I left, they said, “You need to sign some pictures.” He was next in line and said, “Can you sign this?” And I said, “Who should I write it to?” And he said, ‘What about me?’”
As their relationship progressed, the TV personality was often asked if she wanted to walk down the aisle again. Kotb was previously married to Burzi’s Kanga from 2005 to 2008.
“The divorce happened under difficult circumstances,” Kanga told Radar Online in 2018 during a rare interview about their split. “Those were personal reasons for both of us. In retrospect, there was [a] level of immaturity on my part, mistakes I have made. It was a pity that we were only married for a short time. It’s a shame it turned out that way.”
After Kotb adopted daughter Haley in 2017, questions about her future with Schiffman continued. In January 2018, she told Ellen DeGeneres that they “may” get married.
“I feel like everything is great. He is Haley’s father. I’m Haley’s mother. We are together,” she said at the time. “I feel like there’s no rush, except we’re old, and probably — if we’re going to do it, we might as well do it.” But I like it that way. I do not mind. … We enjoy our lives. Yes, I think we are in such a good position.”
Their family grew again in April 2019 when she adopted daughter Hope. In November he proposed.
“He was like, ‘I’ve got something I’d like to say,’ and he said some nice things and then he got down on one knee,” Kotb revealed on the Today show at the time. “Then he said, ‘Will you be my wife?’ … I was totally shocked He had a good poker face.”
However, less than three years later, she announced their breakup.
“Joel and I have had a lot of prayerful and really meaningful conversations over the holidays, and we’ve decided we’re better as friends and parents than as engaged couples,” she shared. Today viewers in January 2022. “So we’ve decided we’re going to start this new year and kind of start it on our new path as loving parents to our adorable, delightful kids, and as friends.”
