A Russian TOP commander has been shot near his home in what is believed to have been a Ukrainian assassination attempt.

Major Oleg Stegachyov, 40, is still alive and Russia has called the shooting a “terrorist act.”

Kiev intelligence sources said Major Oleg Stegachyov, 40, was “directly involved in rocket attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine and the murder of our people.”

The commander worked with strategic bombers of the Tu-95, which Russia has continuously used to bomb Ukraine over the past two years.

Ukrainian military intelligence service GUR said: “The Russian commander of the crew of the strategic bomber Tu-95 received gunshot wounds.

“Whether he survived or not will be clarified by the intelligence service.”

His condition is not completely clear after the shooting, which took place near the Engels air base in the Saratov region, western Russia.
