Police in Woodstock, Alabama, southwest of Birmingham, responded to a home in Bibb County after midnight Sunday where they discovered Mr. Goodson had barricaded himself inside, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. A standoff ensued between Mr. Goodson and law enforcement officials from several agencies, with Mr. Goodson “brandishing a handgun at officers,” the agency said.

Mr. Goodson, 32, was shot and later pronounced dead, the agency said.

It was unclear who shot Mr. Goodson. No further details about the standoff and shooting have been released.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said the shooting is currently under investigation and findings will be turned over to local authorities.

Mr. Goodson was featured on “S-Town,” an exciting podcast series released in 2017 that followed a man named John B. McLemore, who hated his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, and contacted Brian Reed, a podcast host, for help investigating the son of a wealthy family who claimed he got away with murder. The series was created by the producers of ‘This American Life’ and Serial Productions, which acquired The New York Times Company in 2020.
