Cape Town: According to a PTI report, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have expressed their interest in playing the T20 World Cup in June. Rohit and Kohli, stalwarts of Indian cricket in the modern era, have not played in the shortest format for India since their semi-final exit in the 2022 T20 World Cup. There were many speculations that the duo will no longer feature in T20Is wanted to play and concentrate more. about Tests and ODIs. Currently, both are part of the Indian Test team in South Africa.

With the T20I series against Afghanistan being India’s next home assignment, questions are being raised whether both players want to be in the squad or not. Notably, the Afghanistan series is the only international series in the shortest format before the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Two national selectors, Shiv Sunder Das and Salil Ankola, are already in Cape Town and will be joined by their chairman Ajit Agarkar during the second Test at Newlands. A meeting is planned with the players and head coach Rahul Dravid before the squad against Afghanistan is announced.

After the Afghanistan series, India will host England in a five-match Test series, which will be followed by a grueling two-month IPL. What remains to be seen is whether BCCI will pick both Rohit and Virat for the short-term series starting January 11 or whether the duo will play directly in the IPL.

“Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya are not fit. The Afghanistan series tells you nothing. Everything will be decided based on the first month of the IPL,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
