First toy train crosses Plate Girder Bridge in Himachal’s Shimla after almost three months

After the successful trial of the Plate Girder Bridge in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla, which collapsed due to floods in August, the first toy train took off in October this year after almost three months. The trains were stopped on July 7 on the Kalka-Shimla heritage line after the track was damaged at several locations in Himachal Pradesh in Solan and Shimla districts. Two trains resumed till Taradevi on September 26.

“Yesterday we conducted successful tests on this bridge when it collapsed on August 14. The NDRF was busy with rescue operations so we started the restoration on August 26 and upon completion the first train left for Kala today. Now the department would decide to resume all trains; the route is passable and we successfully ran the first train today,” said Randhir Singh, Senior Section Engineer, Northern Railway.

Local residents were also delighted when the train continued its journey after the damage caused by the floods. Shimla Municipal Corporation local councilor Virendra Thakur from Summerhill ward said that it was a difficult time and now this train would be convenient for locals and would revive the tourism sector in the region.
