EVERY year mothers across Britain are celebrated by their children and partners on Mother’s Day.

But because families commemorate the matriarchs in their lives, few people know the true origins of the annual festivities.

When did Mother’s Day start?

In the United Kingdom, mothers Day is linked to Easter and is celebrated on the fourth Sunday by Fastingwhile inside America the celebration takes place on the second Sunday of May.

The expressions Mother’s Day and Mother’s Sunday are often used interchangeably, but actually have different origins.

The annual celebration began in the 16th century as a religious event in which Christians returned to their mother church for a special mass on the fourth Sunday of Lent.

Mothering Sunday was a holiday when servants were traditionally given the day off and luxury foods such as Simnel cake were baked and enjoyed, despite the relative restrictions of Lent.

By the 20th century, Mother’s Day had declined in popularity.

That was until 1921 when Constance Penswick-Smith wrote a book called The Revival of Mothering Sunday, after drawing inspiration from the official American celebration each year called Mother’s Day.

After this, she founded the Association for the Observance of Mothering Sunday, and the day experienced a rebirth.

Who invented Mother’s Day?

Anna Jarvis is credited with inventing Mother’s Day in America, which then spread to Britain.

in 1908, she began campaigning for the establishment of an official Mother’s Day after originally being inspired to celebrate her own mother, who was a peace activist during the American Civil War.

By 1914, Anna had been successful in her mission and was then president Woodrow Wilson has dedicated Mother’s Day as an official day on the American calendar, celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May.

How do we celebrate Mother’s Day?

In Great Britain, Mother’s Day is celebrated in a wide variety of ways.

Families with young children can encourage little ones to make breakfast in bed for their mother as a token of appreciation, or they can make Mother’s Day cards at school.
