The first-ever results from the New Hampshire primary became available within minutes after midnight on Tuesday.

But outside of Dixville Notch, where polls opened at midnight for the small town's six registered voters and closed shortly afterward, polling locations in most of the rest of the state will be open until 7 p.m. Eastern time. The first results will likely become available soon afterwards.

David Scanlan, the foreign secretary, said he expected most votes to be counted on Tuesday evening. News media will likely call the race before all the ballots are counted, once a winner is announced.

The Associated Press does not expect to make calls before 8 p.m., when the last polls close. But in 2016the call during the Republican primaries came exactly at 8 p.m

Results in the Democratic race may come in later as it will take election workers additional time to count write-in votes for President Biden, who is not on the ballot after New Hampshire challenged its decision to put the state back on the party's nominating calendar to place. . The results may be delayed slightly, but government officials expect they will be counted before the end of the night.

“Several larger communities have recruited additional volunteers to help with the process, so we do not expect any major delays,” said Anna Sventek, communications director for the New Hampshire Department of State.
