The shocking story of Jyoti Maurya, a top bureaucrat of the Uttar Pradesh government, is currently trending on social media and not for the best of reasons. The Bareilly Sub-District Magistrate (SDM) is charged with corruption and cheating on her husband, Alok Verma – a class 4^e employee in the state in the Panchayat Raj of the state who supported and financed his wife’s education which eventually helped her to pass the state civil service examination.

What’s the scandal?

Jyoti Maurya is married to Alok Verma, a resident of Bareilly district who works as a sweeper in the Panchayat Raj department of the state. According to reports, the couple got married in 2010, but Jyoti wanted to continue his studies and dreamed of becoming a civil servant by passing the state civil service exam. Jyoti’s husband and in-laws supported her dreams and funded her studies and she eventually passed the PCS exam in 2015 and was later posted as SDM Bareilly.

Jyoti gave birth to twins in 2015 and according to her husband, the couple was happily married until 2020. But it soon turned into a disaster, after Alok found out that Jyoti was cheating on him with another officer.

The revelation left Alok shocked as he had toiled for years to realize his wife’s dreams of completing higher education and becoming a civil servant. He had even enrolled her in a leading coaching center in Prayagraj, but after she tasted success, Jyoti would start cheating on her husband.

Alok Verma has publicly requested his wife to end her illicit relationships so that they can rebuild their family. However, the SDM allegedly used its influence and accused her husband and in-laws of demanding a dowry, causing Alok to lose his job.

In a recent statement, Jyoti Maurya claimed that she was tricked into marrying Alok, who at the time claimed to be a Gram Panchayat officer in the Panchayat Raj Department. Later, when she realized that she had been lied to and Alok was in fact a Class 4 employee, working as a sweeper in the said department, she reversed her decision, but it was too late.

Meanwhile, Alok Verma has claimed that his wife planned to have him killed ever since he made public Jyoti’s infidelity and corruption.

Who is Jyoti Maurya?

Jyoti was born in 1987 and grew up in the Pratapgarh district of Uttar Pradesh. She completed her primary education at a local school in the district and began preparing for the state’s PCS exam after graduation.

In 2015, Jyoti finally realized her dream and cracked the PCS test with flying colors, securing a statewide rank of 16 and a third place among women. She was later posted as SDM Bareilly.

The alleged affair

Alok Verma says that everything was going well between the couple until the year 2020 until he came to know that his wife was having an affair with another officer. The shocking revelation rocked his world and he came out publicly with the story of his wife’s infidelity and also filed corruption charges against her.

Verma had lodged a complaint against his wife’s alleged lover in Prayagraj and at the National Guard headquarters, but no action was reportedly taken, forcing the man to come forward.

‘Diary’ of corruption

Alok Verma has claimed his wife; Jyoti Maurya is a corrupt officer and bribes in the form of commissions. Verma approached the media with allegations of corruption against Jyoti and provided as evidence a diary containing thorough details of the SDM’s illicit revenues, amounting to as much as Rs 6 lakhs in monthly collections, reported Zee News.

Citing details in the diary provided by Verma, the report revealed that Jyoti’s story of corruption began in early 2019 when she was posted to the Kaushambi tea ward as a probation officer and received monthly bribes in the form of commissions.

According to the details given in the alleged notebook, Jyoti Maurya is said to have received Rs 604,000 as a bribe in October 2021.

Alok Verma has claimed that Jyoti threatened to have him killed if he did not leave her, while the SDM accused her husband and her in-laws of mentally abusing her over the dowry.
