A woman has tragically died after being hit by a truck while riding a mobility scooter.

Police say they were called around noon after reports of the truck accident outside a Lidl.

Shocked onlookers said the woman's death was simply 'horrible'.

A man, 32, was arrested after the crash and remained in custody this evening.

Greater Manchester Police said: “Officers were called to reports that a lorry had collided with a woman crossing the road at a pedestrian crossing on Spotland Road, Rochdale, just before the junction with High Street.

“Emergency services attended but tragically a 63-year-old female pedestrian was sadly deceased.”

GENTLEMEN reported that the woman was riding a mobility scooter when she crossed the road.

The driver of the truck was arrested on suspicion of causing death by carelessness the driving.

Police Officer Philip Drummond, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Tragically, a woman has died following the incident earlier today.

“My thoughts are with her family and friends at this devastating time.

“We are already pursuing a number of lines of inquiry and are calling on anyone with information to help us.

“We would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam or CCTV footage.

“The investigation is in its early stages, so any information, no matter how big or small, can really help us find out what happened.”
