Plateau: At least 16 people were killed in an attack in the north-central Plateau state on Monday (local time), AFP news agency reported, citing the Nigerian military. The attack took place in the village of Mushu. Notably, clashes between herders and farmers are very common in the region and have claimed several lives in recent years. Plateau is one of the ethnically and religiously diverse hinterland states in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where inter-communal conflict is not a new phenomenon. These conflicts have claimed several lives in the region in recent years.

In May this year, clashes between farmers and herders claimed more than a hundred lives in Plateau.

The bloody violence, called an ethno-religious conflict, mainly takes place between Muslim herders and Christian farmers. However, agricultural expansion is also an important factor in these bloody conflicts.
