20-year-old woman from Kerala, training to be Agniveer, dies by suicide at Navy hostel in Mumbai

The deceased has been identified as Aparna Nair and said she had come to Mumbai almost two weeks ago. Nair stayed in a hostel in Malwani along with fifteen to twenty girls.

Police said the boy’s body was found hanging in his room last night and soon after the incident was reported, he was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Mumbai: A 20-year-old woman who was undergoing Agniveer training in the Indian Navy reportedly died by hanging in her hostel room at INS Hamla in Mumbai. According to police, the woman, who hails from Kerala, was undergoing training at INS Hamla in Malwani area of western suburban Malad, an official said.

Although no suicide note was recovered at the scene, it appears that the woman took the extreme step for personal reasons. The woman had been training at the facility for the past 15 days after completing her basic training, he said.

The deceased has been identified as Aparna Nair and said she had come to Mumbai almost two weeks ago. Nair was staying at a hostel in Malwani along with 15 to 20 girls, said Senior Inspector Chimaji Adhav of Malwani police station.

According to reports, Nair’s roommate returned to her room at 10:30 am. Though she knocked repeatedly, Nair reportedly did not open the door. The roommate informed the others and the door was broken open. They found Nair’s body and rushed her to a hospital where she was declared brought dead.

Police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) and further investigation is underway, the official added.

Agniveers are soldiers recruited by the armed forces under the Agnipath programme, which was introduced in 2022.
