New Delhi: In a recent development during the 2+2 meeting with Australia, Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar, highlighted the crucial role played by more than 100,000 Indian students in Australia, calling them a “living bridge” that fosters a strong connection between the two nations. The statement came during the 2+2 meeting, where Dr. Jaishankar underlined the exceptional nature of the bilateral relationship between India and Australia over the past year.

Looking back on the milestones achieved, Dr. Jaishankar noted the significant impact of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA), which came into force in December of the previous year. The unfolding economic impact of ECTA in the current year was recognized as evidence of the strengthening of ties between the two countries.

EAM Dr. S. Jaishankar says: “Let me also echo the sentiment that this has been an exceptional year for our relationship… If you look at milestones, the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) came into force last December and we are seeing its economic impact The implications of this are unfolding this year… We can see today that an Indian community of millions of people and more than 100,000 Indian students are truly a living bridge between our two countries.”

The ministers of both countries are expected to discuss various issues, including defense and security, trade and investment, critical minerals, energy, climate change, science and technology, space, education and people-to-people connections. Moreover, regional and global issues are also on their agenda.

Ministers will exchange views on deepening multi-faceted ties, including in defense and security, trade and investment, critical minerals, energy, climate change, S&T, space, education and people-to-people connections. Regional and global issues are also on the agenda.”

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday said progress has been made in several areas during his meeting with Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles, adding that today’s meeting provided an opportunity to strengthen the defense partnership between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said it is great to be back in India. He congratulated India for the way the country organized the World Cup. He emphasized the importance Australia attaches to its relationship with India.

He further emphasized that India and Australia share traditions of democracy, rule of law, freedom of expression and heritage, including cricket. He stated that Australia considers its relationship with India to be one of the most important in the world.

Earlier, Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles inspected the Tri-Services Guard of Honor in the presence of Defense Minister Rajnath Singh at the South Block lawns in New Delhi. The two Australian leaders, along with their Indian counterparts, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, will chair the India-Australia 2+2 dialogue.

The second India-Australia 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue will take place in the national capital on Monday and is expected to discuss a wide range of strategic, defense and security issues between the two countries, an official statement said. Furthermore, the 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue is a cornerstone of the India-Australia relationship and an opportunity to move forward in working together to shape the type of region they want.
