The Trump government accused the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday of submitting incomplete, inaccurate financial disclosures about its foreign ties and ordered the Ivy League school to provide a series of records.
The demand for documents included the names and contact information of university staff that cooperates with foreign governments, including in research collaborations and student exchange programs.
Officials presented in a letter Sent on Thursday from the Education Department to J. Larry Jameson, the president of Penn, who struggled the college with truthfulness in his disclosure of foreign financing.
According to the law, American colleges and universities are required twice a year to report foreign gifts and contracts worth $ 250,000 or more to the government.
According to the Department, more than half of the disclosures were reported too late in Penn’s last application. The government also said that the university had incorrectly identified many of the foreign sources without providing additional details.
Consequently, the Department said that it demands that the college will produce a long and detailed list of documents within 30 days. These documents include copies of admission agreements with foreign governments for international students, as well as records with regard to faculty and research collaborations for the past eight years. The government is also looking for the names and contact details for university staff involved in the “establishment, administration or management” of those agreements.
Moreover, the department asked for the names and contact information of university staff involved in the visitor visitors and everyone involved in international research collaborations.
A Penn spokesperson did not immediately return a request for comments.
The investigation into the foreign financing of Penn has started at least the third part of such research in the past three weeks by the office. On April 18, the department said it was Research into Harvard University’s Foreign donations, and April 25, The Department said that the disclosures were investigated by the University of California, Berkeley. That include studies Similar requests for documents.
Representatives of UC Berkeley and Harvard said they were fully in accordance with the law.
The studies are part of an increasing printing campaign that the Trump government has launched to the elite universities of the country, a strategy to be aimed at re -aligning what they regard as the liberal tilt of elite universities.
