Kristen Stewart has become more comfortable over the years now that her dating life is public.
The actress recalls struggling during her first high-profile romance with Twilight Co-star Robert Pattinson.
“I wasn’t hiding anything. I didn’t talk about my first relationships becoming public because I wanted things that are mine to be mine,” she told the newspaper Sunday Times in March 2017. “I hated how details of my life were turned into commodities and sold around the world. But with so many eyes on me, I suddenly realized [my private life] affects a larger number of people than just me. It was a chance to give up a piece of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves.”
She was later linked to model Stella Maxwell before she got engaged to a screenwriter Dylan Meijer in 2020.
The Oscar-nominated actress discussed how dating in the public eye affected her journey with her sexuality.
“The first time I went out with a girl, I was immediately asked if I was a lesbian. And it’s like, ‘God, I’m 21 years old.’ I felt like maybe there were things that hurt people I’ve been with. Not because I was ashamed of being openly gay, but because I didn’t like giving myself to the public in some way. It felt like such a theft. This was a period where I was quite reserved,” Stewart explained In style in November 2020. “Even in my previous relationships, which were straight, we made every effort not to be photographed doing things – things that weren’t going to be ours. So I think the added pressure of representing a group of people, of representing queerness, was something I didn’t understand at the time. Only now can I see it.”
