A British holidaymaker plunged to his death from a hotel balcony just hours after proposing to his girlfriend, an inquest heard.

An inquest in Staffordshire found that no one will ever know how or why the tragedy happened.

The court was told that Stephen had celebrated his engagement in August 2020 with dinner and drinks with his fiancée.

They returned to their third-floor room, where they had happily sent messages of good news to friends and family news.

Stephen’s partner was in the bathroom when he plunged to his death from the balcony about an hour later.

The inquest heard Alton towers employee Stephen had “mild depression” but no history of suicidal thoughts or acute mental problems health disease.

A toxicology report found he was “heavily intoxicated” at the time of the fall.

Daniel Howe, assistant coroner for Staffordshire, said: “Stephen died as a result of a fall from height.

“He seemed to be in a good mood. He had proposed to his girlfriend that day and was happy about it. He made positive comments to family, op Facebookand to other residents of the hotel.

“I cannot find out why he approached the balcony.”

Stephen’s sister paid tribute to the vending machine’s manager, who was affectionately known as “Mr Fix-It”.

She said Stokeon Trent Live: “He was the nicest person ever, not a bad bone in his body. He was the best uncle ever.”
