The official name for the popular pastry is a London cheesecake, although despite the name it contains no cheese.

The retro dessert consists of squares of puff pastry filled with a layer of frangipane, a dollop of jam and finished with icing and coconut flakes.

One customer posted a photo of the cakes to the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains and fans of the pastry quickly took a trip down memory lane.

The message read: “Growing up in the 80s my mum always had London cheesecake from the bakery, what a throwback. They are now available at Aldi.”

Another fan added: “We loved it – long before the cheesecake we know today.”

While another person said: “I absolutely love them, it reminds me of my mum.”

A third person commented: “I always loved them as a kid. I’m 55 now and my dad still buys them for me every now and then.”

Some local, independent bakeries may also have the product in stock, so it may be worth calling them if you want to get your hands on one.

Some people in the comments said it might be possible to get the item from Greggs, but others said they had tried and had no luck.

We may have the answer to this, and it could be a disappointment to some Northerners hoping to get their hands on a “Hairy Mary.”

Not all stores across the country are equal when it comes to Greggs products and we have a full list of what can be found where when it comes to regional offers.
