The Dutch rail system is disrupted, as service to Amsterdam is discontinued

The Dutch train operator warned of delays across the Netherlands as train service to and from Amsterdam, the capital, was canceled for a second day on Monday.

ProRail, the government agency responsible for maintaining the railways, mentioned problems with the system for monitoring and controlling trains, which first came to light on Sunday afternoon. All employ was canceled and ProRail told customers it had restarted the system and hoped to restore service by the end of the day.

But towards the end of Sunday evening, the problem, an IT problem preventing trains from being monitored, resurfaced and the service was canceled for the second day.

“There are no trains to and from Amsterdam this morning either,” says ProRail early Monday morning. “The advice to these travelers is to arrange replacement transport for the journey to school or work or, for example, to work at home.”

Service to Schiphol, one of Europe’s busiest airports, was canceled and a Sunday Harry Styles concert in Amsterdam was delayed due to the disruptions. The Dutch Railways, the main carrier of passenger rail, called on travelers not to come to Amsterdam on Monday and to work at home.
