APPLE is using Google's approach to improve its own Maps app for UK users, which could lure iPhone users away from the rival platform.

The tech giant has unveiled plans to use Apple cars and company-approved walkers wearing Apple backpacks to collect data for its maps.

“Apple is conducting ground surveys with vehicles around the world to collect data to improve Apple Maps and support the Look Around feature,” the company said in a statement to iMore.

“Vehicle searches can use equipment mounted on the outside of vehicles, as well as iPhones, iPads or other devices inside vehicles.”

The new data collection project starts today (February 21) and will focus on Birmingham, Manchester and London.

The tech company will use LiDAR recording equipment and imagery to take the Maps app to a new level of accuracy.

Backpackers will travel through cities, while Apple cars with cameras on them will roam the roads.

Although the Apple-approved backpackers will only be around in the warmer months, between May 20 and September 11.

City dwellers and rural dwellers alike may encounter one of these Apple explorers in the coming months.

The project will continue until October 17 and will hopefully result in improved details, navigation and more available information for places.

Google Street View

One feature Apple wants to polish is the Look Around feature, which is very similar to Google Maps' Street View.

That explains why Apple has taken the same camera convoy approach as Google, a method the search engine giant began popularizing in 2007.

Like Google, Apple will maintain the same privacy protections for people as its cameras move around the UK.

This means that if your face or license plate is captured, they will be blurred.

Apple could also introduce a similar home security precaution as Google Maps, allowing people to delete images of their home on Street View.

This has been advised by security experts to prevent thieves from using Street View to plan possible burglaries.
