San Francisco: An American man with type 1 diabetes has credited his Apple Watch with saving his life after the device called emergency services when he fell unconscious. Josh Furman, 40, stated that when his blood sugar levels drop, his insulin pump usually alerts him by sounding an alarm. However, earlier this year his blood sugar levels fell so low that he lost consciousness and hit his head on the floor while home alone, KSNV reports.

“I don’t know how long I was gone, but when I woke up, the Apple Watch had actually called 911. But I couldn’t talk. It sounded like I had a mouth full of marbles. 911 couldn’t hear me, but they had the watch’s GPS, so they knew where I was,” Furman said.

Additionally, he explained that he had set up his emergency contacts in his device, which allowed him to contact his mother, who informed the 911 operator of her son’s medical condition.

I don’t think people know enough about their Apple Watch to realize what it can actually do with the fall detection (feature). Elderly people are probably not familiar with the fall detection (function). You actually have to turn it on on your iPhone,” Furman said.

In August, Apple Watch’s Cardio Fitness notifications helped a healthy man identify a major heart problem.

A 40-year-old man wearing an Apple Watch Series 6 kept receiving notifications about low VO2 max.

Researchers from the Shackler School of Medicine and the Leviev Heart Center in Israel performed tests on the man and diagnosed a major heart problem: familial non-ischemic cardiomyopathy with severely reduced left ventricular systolic function.
