An Australian tourist in Bali was left bloodied and bruised after he was brutally beaten for dancing with the wrong woman during a night out.

Perth man Matthew Stevenson said about six people attacked and robbed him, beating him so badly he needed 10 stitches to his head.

Stevenson, 27, was at Sky Garden nightclub in Kuta on Friday evening when he was attacked, leaving him with a broken cheek and split scalp.

‘After seeing the images I realized how close I could have come [to dying]’ the man said 9News.

He said he was dancing with a woman whose brother wasn’t happy about it. “This guy from nowhere just pushes me,” he said.

Thirty minutes later, Mr Stevenson and his friends decided to leave the club, but things got worse from there.

“The guy put me in a headlock and he choked me and made me fall and I hit my head and there was a pool of blood next to me,” he said.

He was taken to hospital where he was treated for multiple lacerations and his facial wounds were sewn back together.

Although he is now out of the hospital, he is not out of the woods yet and has had constant headaches all weekend.

“I’m on hospital painkillers and antibiotics and they help, but last night I couldn’t sleep,” he said.

“I’m still bleeding a little from my head and I think I have a broken cheek or eye socket because there is some blood in the corner of both my eyes.”

The scaffolder was due to fly back to Perth on Monday for his brother’s wedding, but that may not happen as he was also robbed in the attack.

The criminals stole his passport, his phone and the money he was carrying.

One of the men who attacked him is reportedly in custody in Bali and he is hopeful the others will also face justice.

‘People die from attacks like that. That’s cowardly,” Stevenson said.
