With their nods for Best Female Actor and Best Male Actor in a Limited Series, Beef costars Ali Wong And Steven Yeun became the first Asian Americans to take home Golden Globe awards in their respective categories.
An emotional Wong, who was going through a divorce from her husband Justin Hakuta while filming the Netflix show, her ex called her “best friend” in her acceptance speech on Sunday, January 7, thanking him for his “love and support.”
A few minutes later, Yeun took the stage to claim his statuette and mentioned feelings of “isolation” and “separation” throughout his life — before saying, “I just realized this feels like the plot of Frozen.”
In the critically acclaimed series, Wong and Yeun, longtime friends who also starred as voice actors in the 2019 Netflix animated series Tuca & Bertie – play strangers from opposite sides of the class divide who get caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse after a parking lot confrontation. While the show is filled with dark comedy, the characters are also put through the wringer emotionally, giving both actors a chance to develop their dramatic skills.
Show runner Lee Sung Jinwhich he was also a writer about Tuca & Bertie, originally introduced Wong’s character as an older white man. But after talking to the actress about the project as friends, he came to believe that a character patterned after her – successful and ambitious, of Chinese and Vietnamese descent – would make the story much richer.
Despite the trio’s history, Wong was still unsure that the casting decision would work as she and Yeun had never been together on camera.
“It was quite scary,” she said Variety last year. “But I remember it was electric after the first time we read together. I didn’t know what kind of actor Steven was or if he would throw a donut at my head between takes just because he would really like the animosity of it all? That was a legitimate concern. And uh, no! He didn’t. He was very loving and sweet between takes.”
Beef also took home the Golden Globe for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
