During this period Foster made 23 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The 40-year-old also won back-to-back League Cup titles while playing for Manchester United.

However, Foster has admitted that when he first arrived at the club from Stoke City he suffered from “imposter syndrome”.

The goalkeeper was behind Edwin van der Sar and Tim Howard, among others, while stars such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo were in the selection.

He told talkSPORT: “I look back at that person who played for Manchester United back then and, to be honest, that’s not me.

“I was so wet behind the ears, I didn’t understand how anything in life worked, I just looked around.

“You [Andy Goldstein] said to me, ‘It must have been incredible, it must have been wonderful,’ and it wasn’t.

“I hated every second of it. To be honest, I didn’t enjoy it.

“I was nervous, terrified of making a mistake, terrified of what the outside world would say about it.

“And that’s a bad way to go about it, isn’t it?

“If you go to competitions and fear the worst: ‘Don’t make a mistake,’ you’re immediately off to a bad start.

“I looked around at some of the big names around me and just thought, ‘How did I get here?'”

Foster made just twelve Premier League appearances for Manchester United.

He did start in the 2009 League Cup final, which ended with a victory over Tottenham on penalties.

However, he insisted that the 2010 cup win with Birmingham City had more meaning for him.

He added: “We were underdogs to win, we were 16-1.

“We won the game, we fought against relegation, they were at the top, they had Cesc Fabregas [Robin] Van Persie, Jack Wilshere…

“And we won the game 2-1, and you could really enjoy it.

“You knew what it meant to those Birmingham fans, it just felt a little bit more special.”
