A look like no other, a beauty that makes your eyes stand still, Bengali superstar Jet And Susmita Chatterjee have already set our hearts. The duo is back with the pan-India release of their film Manush – The child of destiny. This is the second time the two have appeared on screen together. The action thriller film explores the themes of human life and navigates through the various characters. In an exclusive conversation with india.com, Jeet spoke about Bengali cinema’s struggles at the box office, and Susmita talked about how age-appropriate roles influence her.

Jeet on the struggle of regional cinema says, ‘The Bangla industry is…’

Bengal is known for its beautiful artistic expression. Whether it is art, dance, music or film. However, while regional cinema is flourishing – like the blockbuster hits from South India, even the regional Punjabi films crossed the box office of Rs 100 crore – this is still a feat that Bengali cinema can achieve in the mainstream. When asked where the delay is, Jeet replied: “ It’s hard to say. Choose the right kind of content. Uski marketing and publicity bhi ache se honi chaiye. Content acha ho, promotion hurts like 100 crore koi badi baat nhi hai. It’s about the right content, marketing and more. Bengali cinema is also underexposed. It is a big industry and one of the oldest industries isko abhi take abhi take itna step out krke humne kabhi koshish nhi kiya ki zyda se zyda darsha kon take pahunchya jaye. But I hope that will happen one day.”

When asked where the fraternity fell short in bringing more Bengali films to the fore, Jeet said, “Waqt. Time. Tab samay alag tha, ab samay agya hai.” While South Indian films have always had a different impact on the audience in terms of their stories, action and films, not many can say that about Bengali films. We asked the Chengiz star cast if there are any clichés or stereotypes regarding Bengali films, Jeet said: “ logon ko lagta hai Bengal mai sirf art house movies banti hain. But aise nhi hi. (People think that only arthouse films are made in Bengali, but that is not the case). There are a slew of great arthouse films produced in Bengal but there are several other action, drama and rom-com films that are also being appreciated by the audience, the Bengali actor added.

In an effort to bring Bengali cinema to the fore, Jeet is firmly at the forefront of the movement. After Chengiz, this is Jeet and Susmita’s second pan-India film together. Chengiz was highly appreciated and loved by the audience and expectations are also high for Manush.
