Shooting at Bondi Junction: How the cocaine drug lord’s killers failed to set fire to the getaway Porsche

A silver-gray Porsche found close to the scene of a shooting that shot a drug lord could be a getaway car that the hitmen failed to blow up.

Cocaine cartel boss Alen Moradian, 48, who was dubbed Australia’s Tony Soprano, was executed just before 8:30am on Tuesday in the underground car park of a block of flats next to the Holiday Inn on Spring Street, in Bondi Junction.

In a brutal daylight murder, he was shot dead while sitting in the front seat of his car in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, with two suspected hitmen now on the run.

Police believe a burned-out Porsche in James Street, about a mile from where the shots were fired, is linked to the shooting.

Detectives are also investigating whether a second burnt-out vehicle — a Holden Commodore found on Cook Lane in the inner-city suburb of Zetland — may be linked to the shooting.

A third vehicle – an abandoned luxury Porsche also found on James Street – may have been the target of a failed attempt to set it on fire.

A red object seen in the front seat of the vehicle as police dusted off fingerprints may have been a jerry can.

The police are now investigating whether escapees also tried to set fire to that car, but failed.

With two gunmen on the loose, local residents of Bondi Junction were advised to avoid the area and multiple police cars blocked the streets near the Holiday Inn.

Moradian, who hoarded Versace furniture and once had the ceiling of his suburban home painted as the Sistine Chapel, is said to have been a member of the Commission, an underworld network linked to the Comanchero outlaw biker gang that controls the city’s drug trade .

Three crime scenes are all being forensically examined by specialized police.

Moradian, who was also referred to as “fat head”, was arrested in 2007 along with his wife Natasha Youkhana after investigating what NSW police at the time called one of the largest cocaine and money laundering syndicates they had ever seen in the state.

After months of surveillance, police discovered more than $19 million in cash and expensive assets that they claimed came from the sale of at least 100 kilograms of high-quality cocaine.

Among the assets seized were luxury cars, boats, jet skis, motorcycles and 17 guns, including a gold-plated Magnum .357 pistol.

In an email to the court, Youkhana, who is from Kuwait, warned her husband to be careful.

“Why are you just sitting there showing off – ‘I’m the man, I’m the man’?” read the email.

“See Tony Soprano doing that?

“He doesn’t care who people think is in charge, (money) is his number one priority. You, on the other hand, want the attention, you get a big headline, you love it.

“People like that don’t survive.”

A court later heard that Moradian dropped $1 million — in cash — on Versace furniture and housewares.

He and his wife had converted their West Pennant Hills McMansion into an Italianate-style palazzo — complete with Renaissance-inspired garden statues and a Sistine Chapel-style mural on their living room ceiling.

Moradian was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in the syndicate, which allegedly imported a kilogram of cocaine from Chicago for $30,000 and then sold it in Sydney for $190,000.
