Brian’s appearance comes as Succession has been named the top drama of 2023.

Jessie Armstrong’s masterpiece, starring Brian and Jeremy Strong, topped Radio Times’ list of top shows, followed by Happy Valley and Blue Lights.

Critics of the TV Bible compiled the list to round off the television year and named Succession, the final series of which aired earlier this year, in the top spot.

In April, the show ended its fourth season, with a shocking twist that attracted millions of viewers and became the most-watched episode of the entire show.

Meanwhile, Sally Wainright’s Happy Valley, starring Sarah Lancashire, also aired its final series and came second in the shows list, while Blue Lights came third.

In the final episode of Succession, the fate and future of the Roy children and the company their late father Logan Roy (Brian Cox) founded were at stake.

The entire series was building up until the final few episodes, as all of Logan’s kids – Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Connor (Alan Ruck) – got ready for the final Waystar Royco. vote in the board about the merger with the GoJo of Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard).

The 90-minute series finale is directed by Mark Mylod and written by series creator Jesse Armstrong, and after many twists and turns, it is Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) who ultimately takes over as Waystar CEO, under new owner Matsson.

At the time. The Daily Mail’s TV critic Christopher Stevens gave the show five stars and said the ending was “everything we hoped for.”

He was not surprised by the ‘strong language from the beginning and throughout’; it was the very last episode of the ‘silliest show in television history’. We would have been shocked if there had not been strong language.”

But he added: ‘We should have been warned that what followed was a 90-minute drama, so painful and so grueling that by the end my internal organs felt like Roman Roy’s face: stitched up and bleeding everywhere.’

We deserved at least some warning: ‘This program contains intense scenes of psychological and emotional breakdown.

‘Don’t watch if you can’t bear to see your favorite characters tear themselves apart, their dreams ground into dirt, their weaknesses brutally exploited. This is self-destruction on a cosmic scale.

Even more devastating was Roman’s revelation, during a boardroom argument, that he and Kendall were probably not even their father’s natural children. Shiv was the only blood relative.

‘At that moment I feared for Jeremy Strong, a method actor who stays in character during filming. He grabbed Culkin by the throat and started clawing at his eyes.

‘Those offices have glass walls. Every executive, every assembled employee and advisor was there to witness this climax of disintegration.

‘But they didn’t see it the way we did. It was really traumatic. Some of us could be scarred forever. There should actually have been warnings.’

In February, Happy Valley came to an end after three seasons, 18 episodes and nine years.

And the final episode of the BBC drama lived up to the incredible hype, with many viewers calling the episode ‘a masterpiece’ and ‘one of the greatest television finals of all time’.

Sarah’s starring role as Sergeant Catherine Cawood was showered with praise from critics and fans alike, as her final confrontation with James Norton’s Tommy Lee Royce (or as she described it as “a bit of a struggle”) was considered the perfect way to end the series to end. .

While many fans expected a thrilling conclusion, and perhaps even Catherine’s demise, writer Sally’s decision to revolve her finale around a 15-minute kitchen table war of words between Tommy and Catherine left viewers in awe.

‘A standoff worth waiting for – no guns, no knives, no punches but a war of words that Catherine desperately needed to say. Great stuff from Sally Wainwright, a taster from Sarah Lancashire and a whirlwind of emotions from James Norton. What a finale,” said one viewer.

Others praised Sarah’s performance, with one fan concluding that ‘she deserves all the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Oscars and it still won’t be enough.’
