A derelict cottage dubbed 'Britain's loneliest house' has been taken off the market for a heartbreaking reason.

The abandoned three-bedroom cottage in Whernside, North Yorkshire, once cost £300,000, but estate agents have decided to pull the plug on the listing.

Sellers decided to put the property, which has no electricity or water supply, on the shelf after failing to attract a buyer within two years.

In May 2022, estate agent Fisher Hopper reduced the asking price to £250,000, but without success.

The secluded house, three Blea Moor Cottages, is a 20-minute walk from the nearest car park and neatly situated next to England's most remote signal box on the Settle-Carlisle railway line.

One of the cottage's bedrooms features bright blue carpets, but parts of the room are overrun by significant mold.

The property's kitchen appears to be the most well-maintained room, with a large stove, wooden worktops and exposed brick wall.

The house has no electricity or running water, with previous tenants generating the former using a windmill and transporting the latter using a trailer.

Interested parties were warned by sellers that they would need a 4×4 motorbike or similar vehicle to reach the cottage, given its remote location.

But estate agents called the house, which sits below Whernside, the highest mountain in the Three Peaks challenge, a smart investment.

“The property represents an interesting investment, with a range of potential commercial opportunities: private holiday home, unique AirBnB style experience, sleepover or refreshment stop on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge route,” said Fisher Hopper.

“Plans will be subject to necessary consents – this is in the heart of the National Park – but for the right buyer with vision there is great potential here.”

It comes after an abandoned 'haunted house' bigger than Buckingham Palace was left behind as locals clashed with its millionaire owner.

The eerie Hamilton Palace lies as a derelict building in lush Sussex land after it was abandoned.

The enormous house is owned by multi-millionaire Nicholas van Hoogstraten, who said it was built to last 2,000 years.

But the rotting exterior shows that it will never be finished at all.

What should have been one of the most spectacular properties in the country is now a sorry sight.

Elsewhere, a 'boring' looking bungalow has hit the market for £695,000, and it comes with a number of hidden surprises.

At first glance, the modest property in Morpeth, Northumberland, seems like nothing special.

But potential buyers get more than they bargained for when they step inside.
