A DRIVING instructor has shared three tips for driving in the snow, including an essential but easily forgotten check.

One of the specialists from The Complete Theory Test Kit got to work TikTok to share the urgent advice if the weather gets colder.

Driving in winter conditions involves a series of usually invisible hazards and requires caution motorists.

First, the expert urged viewers to remember that visibility is often lower in cold weather, especially when there is snow or rain.

The heavier it is, the shorter you can see ahead, which can of course increase the risk of an accident.

They advised driving more slowly and leaving extra space between yourself and the vehicle in front.

This gives you more time notice potential hazards and respond to the behavior of other road users.

Second, frozen brake lines can reduce the effectiveness of the braking system, leading to longer braking distances.

Likewise, Car dealer estimate that icy roads can increase the distance it takes to stop up to ten times.

According to the RACthe average family car takes 23 meters to stop from 48 km/h, which can be up to 230 metres, or about the length of two football fields, depending on road conditions.

That’s why it’s crucial to check that your brakes are in good condition before you set off, especially on cold days.

Before your trip, look at your brakes and look for visible signs of damage or freezing.

Alternatively, on a quiet road, gently accelerate to a slow speed, around 10mph, before braking to ensure everything works without the risk of a collision.

The RAC also advises drive in a higher gear than normal and avoid sudden changes in speed or direction.

However, the best choice is to avoid all driving on slippery roads unless absolutely necessary.

Finally, the TikTok expert revealed what to do if a sharp turn sends you into a skid.

They said: “Turning in the snow can lead to Skidding.

“If this happens, steer gently to avoid spinning the car.”
