The striker scored for the fifth consecutive game to help United win 2–1, with Scott McTominay the winner.

But some Villa fans have suggested Hojlund's goal should not have stood as Casemiro was offside in the build-up.

The United midfielder was in an offside position when Luke Shaw crossed his free-kick into the penalty area.

Casemiro jumped and competed for the ball, but didn't touch it – in fact, he wasn't near it.

A Villa defender headed the ball behind for a corner, which ultimately led to Hojlund firing in after Harry Maguire's knockout.

But because the goal came from a new phase of play, VAR could not look at the free kick and whether Casemiro had interfered with the Villa defender.

That infuriated some Villa supporters, who claimed they were struggling.

One fan responded, saying: “Casemiro is offside for the action leading to the corner. United scores from the corner.

“No VAR control. What's the point?”

Another added: “To really put the icing on the cake, Casemiro was offside on the free-kick that led to the corner. 🤦🏻‍♂️ I hate football on days like today.

“I really didn't do much wrong and ended up on the defeated side. And it's always against them. Annoying

A third wrote: “Here we go Casemiro offside from a free kick – lino and referee miss that and give a corner. They score out, useless.🙄”

And another commented: “That United goal was crazy. The softest free-kick of the season which then led to Casemiro being offside as they forced a corner in which they scored.

“Referees are so afraid to make the right decisions and become too complacent with VAR.”
