Center that will soon regulate AI; Draft regulatory framework to be released in July

New Delhi: The government said on Tuesday it is working to unveil a draft regulatory framework for artificial intelligence (AI) by June-July this year, amid concerns about a rise in deepfakes and user harm linked to the new technology.

Speaking at a Nasscom event in the capital, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar said the government is working on a draft AI regulatory framework and will release it soon.

“The goal is to use AI for economic growth and address potential risks and damage,” the minister said.

“We will fully realize the potential of AI, but also put in place the guardrails to prevent misuse,” he added.

The Nasscom-BCG report, unveiled at the event, states that the Indian AI market is likely to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25 percent to $17 billion by 2027, with similar growth in AI investments.

Earlier this week, the government reiterated that internet platforms and social media intermediaries in India have a legal obligation to ensure that no misinformation or deepfakes end up on their respective platforms. In a post on

“Using credible fact-checkers to label misinformation is good,” he said.

“All internet platforms and intermediaries in India have a legal obligation to ensure that their users do not post misinformation/deepfakes on their platforms,” he added.

Earlier this month, the government said it would regularly monitor intermediaries' compliance with the IT Rules, 2021 and the direction given in the IT ministry's latest advisory.
